Wanted! Drawings made by Johan Huizinga

Johan Huizinga might be the greatest cultural historian the Netherlands has ever known. Author of Autumntide of the Middle Ages (Herfsttij der Middeleeuwen), Homo Ludens, and In the Shadow of Tomorrow (In de schaduwen van morgen), among other works. Books that are relevant to this day, also internationally. ‘We live in a possessed world. And we know it’ he writes in the latter book, published in 1935, in which he analyses the developments of his time, highlighting the rising populism and extremism.
Huizinga was also a talented illustrator and drew a large number of, often comical, drawings, sketches, and doodles.

At the initiative of Huizinga expert Anton van der Lem, on
1 February 2025 – eighty years after his passing – Huizinga will be given something that should have happened years ago: an exhibition of his most important drawings. The exhibition will be held at the University Museum in Groningen, the city where he was born, studied, and worked as a Professor of History for ten years.
Unfortunately, only copies are left of some drawings. But perhaps some of his work is as of yet unknown. Therefore, the exhibition organizers appeal to the public: ‘Do you own an original or a copy of a drawing by Johan Huizinga? We would love to show it at the first exhibition of Huizinga’s drawings.’ Visit the
website for more details and examples of drawings.

Work in progress. New online UG platform for alumni, UG staff, students, and businesses

RUGconnect is the new online platform of the UG. RUGconnect has been set up to connect the various members of our academic community: students and alumni but also UG staff, study associations, and businesses. Through RUGconnect, you can expand your network, look for interesting vacancies or internships, share and attend events, get in touch with other professionals from your field, explore collaborations in the professional world, or reminisce about the good old days with former students. This enables us to collaborate even better in the future and we are able to contribute to a valuable, life-long connection between students, alumni, and the labour market.
Alumni need to be patient for a little while longer before they are able to create a profile on the platform. RUGconnect will be open to them at the start of 2025. Part of the functionalities are already available to businesses, institutions, students, and UG staff.
Would you like to know what RUGconnect has to offer you?
