NINA MAE HARPER. This is the name that Nina Eggens (History of Art, 2001) is using to work on her first solo album. After years of wandering. Literally: from Groningen via Aberdeen to Valencia. And musically: from the ‘student band’ Nina’s Dochters to the alt country formation THE MALPASO GANG. With country-folk, rock and a touch of blues, and from ballad to upbeat.
And a debut album for VANITY BOX with Good luck, See You Friday. The four members, who include three alumni – Hugo Heinen (MA in Arts and Culture, 2021), Yorick Karseboom (MA in Philosophy, 2021), and Sybolt Friso (MA in Pedagogical Sciences and MA in Philosophy, 2023), are already familiar faces on the Groningen music scene. They’ve played with SHITFACED MERMAIDS, FERAL TIDES, and Atoomclub, for example. Put them together and the result is a great noisy Indie rock album.
And a debut album for SLEEPER NELL, otherwise known as Pieternel Teekens (MA in Arts, Culture, and Media, 2007) with Vanilla Town. Also a veteran. Famous for her collaboration with Meindert Talma (History, 1994), with whom she’s now touring. And before that, with Mama Homemade Dress. Accompanied here by Gijs van Veldhuizen (Religious Studies, 2006).
Joni Mitchell meets Bettie Serveert meets the Cocteau Twins.
KOMODO with singer/guitarist Tommy Ebben (MA in Journalism, 2009) is ready for studio album number three: Hell Go Rhythm. According to the VPRO, the exotic rockers, comprising a melting pot of the most diverse musical genres imaginable, are probably on the brink of a breakthrough with larger audiences. Ebben, formerly with THE SMALL TOWN VILLAINS and in 2014 3FM Serious Talent, is also making serious inroads on his solo career, such as with his tribute to Dylan last year.
And last but not least, viola player Iteke Wijbenga (MA in Pedagogical Sciences, 2013), is undoubtedly a familiar name to lovers of chamber music. She is a part-time member of the RESIDENTIE ORKEST DEN HAAG (available in collaboration with Shakuar on Spotify), plays with the INTERCONTINENTAL ENSEMBLE and the Helios Trio, and is a popular guest violinist, both solo and with other guest orchestras. Wijbenga also organizes the Festival of Chamber Music in Groningen, which will take place in December this year as usual.
