Good news for the rest of the Netherlands: PÉ AND RINUS – also known as Peter de Haan, Pharmacy, class of 1984, and Frank den Hollander, English, not graduated – spent the past 45 years on stage together. That’s why, starting this summer, they will go on tour. They will even play at pop temple Paradiso.
Thirty years ago, MEINDERT TALMA – History, class of 1994 – released his debut single 20 jaar muzikale fruitmand. With his recent album Gezinsverbijstering, Talma has now released twenty albums. And the last album includes a book! (Part 3 from the autobiographical cycle ‘Nederlands Onbekendste Popster’ [The Netherlands’ least known popstar])
Although Weekend at Waikiki, founded 42 years ago, no longer exists, singer THIJS HELFRICH (graduate of history in 1988, nowadays director of Wild Sea) and keyboard player WIJNAND HELFRICH (graduate of biology in 1988, PhD in Medical Sciences in 1995 and nowadays professor in Immunology) Helfrich are still active in the artistic scene. Together with, among others, PETER DUINKERKEN (graduate of law in 1981, nowadays judge), keyboard player in the revived I Spy, they created GELUID VAN HET NOORDEN [Sound of the North], an artistic tribute to the ground-breaking scientific innovations, buildings, and discoveries from the three Northern provinces of the Netherlands. It will premiere next year.
Sadly, the Groningen-African band Benkadi also no longer exists, but the drummer, who is also a beloved pharmacist in the Oosterpark neighbourhood, GEORGE AMOFA – Pharmacy, class of 2002 – can still frequently be spotted at festivals and other events with Highlife band Hello and percussion band Gibodi.
Are we then only looking back in this Spotified? No, there is also promising young talent. The future is bright for IOANA IORGU – BA in Psychology, class of 2021 – with her poetic postpunk. Although, she has actually been active as a guitarist, drummer, and producer since she was 14 years old, so she is technically also a veteran.
Lastly, the group HISTER, with bass player and singer Merel Weijer – Philosophy, class of 2004 and member of the editorial board of Broerstraat 5 – has released its first full album: Duuster, which is again filled with Groningen-language at times dark indie rock. The Hister pair was expanded making the winner of the Grunninger Laidjesfestival (Groningen Songfestival) sound even more solid, diverse, vulnerable and exciting.
A Spotified filled with anniversaries and nostalgia.
And promising young talent.
